Quick Answer

An EIN for Amazon is the 9-digit federal tax ID the marketplace records during its tax interview for a US company. The IRS charges $0 for it. A responsible party holding an SSN or ITIN gets one at irs.gov in 15 minutes. A responsible party holding neither files Form SS-4 by fax, writing Foreign on line 7b.

Every marketplace and every payment processor asks the same question at the same moment: what is the tax ID of the business receiving this money? For a US company the answer is one 9-digit EIN, and the IRS charges $0 for it. This page covers what Amazon collects, what Stripe, PayPal and Shopify collect, why interviews stall, and the route that stays open when the online tool says no. If you want the price answer before anything else, you can apply for your EIN number online or read the free route in full first.

Do you need an EIN for Amazon?

You need an EIN for Amazon whenever the selling account belongs to a US company. Amazon stores that 9-digit number against the account. A sole proprietor holding an SSN enters the SSN instead, and pays $0 either way.

Amazon does not issue the number and does not verify it against a state record. It collects the tax ID, matches the legal name to IRS records, and stops the account from moving to active status when the two disagree. One character of difference between Sunrise Trading LLC and Sunrise Trading L.L.C. is enough to hold an interview at pending.

The trigger is the entity, not the sales volume. An LLC formed in Wyoming with 0 units sold still enters an EIN in the interview, because the account holder is a company rather than a person. Waiting for a first sale before applying delays the account, not the tax ID.

Every US entity type lands in the same place. A single-member LLC, a multi-member LLC, a C corporation, and a partnership all carry one EIN each, for the life of the entity, at $0 in year 2 and every year after. An EIN never renews and never expires.

The same 9 digits then serve every other platform. Stripe, PayPal, Shopify Payments, Walmart Marketplace, Etsy, and eBay each read one EIN from one company. Applying a second time for the same entity creates 2 IRS tax accounts rather than replacing the first, and that duplicate is what produces mismatched 1099-K reporting later.

What does the Amazon tax interview ask for?

The tax interview collects 5 items: the legal name, the tax classification, the tax ID, a permanent address, and an electronic signature. US entities certify on Form W-9. Foreign entities certify on Form W-8BEN-E.

The tax classification field decides which certification form the interview builds. Selecting a US person routes to Form W-9, which carries the EIN. Selecting a non-US person routes to Form W-8BEN-E, which carries the EIN in Part I and the treaty claim in Part III.

A non-resident who has formed a US LLC sits on the US side of that fork. The company is a US person for this purpose even when every owner lives abroad, so the interview takes Form W-9 and the company's own EIN rather than the owner's foreign tax number.

The legal name has to match the EIN exactly as the IRS holds it. That string is printed on the CP-575 confirmation letter the IRS issues once per EIN. Copy it from that letter character for character, including the comma or its absence before LLC.

The permanent address does not have to be inside the United States. Line 7b of Form SS-4 accepts the word Foreign, the responsible party's address on line 6 accepts a foreign country, and Amazon's interview accepts a non-US permanent address on the same basis.

The signature closes the interview and starts validation. Amazon returns the result on screen, or holds the interview at pending status until its review finishes. A name-to-EIN mismatch is cause number 1 of the 4 failure causes listed further down this page.

How do you get an EIN for Amazon without an SSN?

File Form SS-4 and write Foreign on line 7b where the SSN goes. Fax it to 855-641-6935 from a US-based entity, or 855-215-1627 from outside the United States. The IRS fee is $0.

Line 7b is the whole obstacle. The IRS online EIN Assistant validates the responsible party against SSN and ITIN records and stops an applicant holding neither. Form SS-4 on paper has no such validation, and the instructions accept the entry Foreign in that field.

The rest of the form is short. Line 1 is the legal name, line 4 is the mailing address, line 7a and 7b are the responsible party, line 8a marks the LLC box, line 8b is the member count, line 9a is the tax classification, line 10 is the reason for applying, and line 18 asks whether this entity ever held an EIN before.

Fax reaches the same IRS system the online tool feeds, and the resulting EIN is identical in every respect. What fax does not provide is a tracking number, a receipt, or a status page, so an applicant waits with no signal that the pages arrived.

The Instructions for Form SS-4 state the turnaround for each paper route: 4 business days by fax when a return fax number is supplied, and 4 weeks by mail. The IRS also answers international applicants by phone at 267-941-1099. All 3 routes charge $0, and all 3 produce the same 9-digit number and the same CP-575 letter.

Have an SSN? irs.gov is free — really. The full no-SSN walkthrough sits on the page for people who apply for an EIN without an SSN, and the broader non-resident guide sits with the rest of the material for ein for foreigners.

Does Stripe require an EIN?

Stripe requires an EIN for every US business account. A US sole proprietor enters an SSN instead. Stripe verifies the EIN and legal name against IRS records before payouts begin, and charges $0 to store it.

Stripe asks the question during onboarding, in the business details step, before the first payout is scheduled. A company account with no tax ID reaches active status for testing and stops before money moves.

Stripe matches on the pair, not on the number alone. The legal business name and the EIN must agree with IRS records, which is why the CP-575 letter is the document to copy from rather than the state formation certificate.

Stripe Atlas customers receive the EIN as part of formation, and no second application is needed. Filing again for the same entity opens a duplicate IRS tax account and splits the year's reporting across 2 numbers.

A mismatch surfaces as a 1099-K filed against a name the IRS does not recognize, and a backup withholding notice follows. Fixing that later means a letter to the IRS. Fixing it before the first payout means retyping one field.

Does PayPal require an EIN?

PayPal requires an EIN on business accounts held by US companies. A US sole proprietor uses an SSN. PayPal reports payment volume on Form 1099-K, and the tax ID on file is the number that report is filed under.

PayPal collects the tax ID when a business account is opened and again when reporting thresholds come into view. An account with no confirmed tax ID faces backup withholding at 24 percent on reportable payments under IRS rules.

PayPal, like Amazon, splits accounts on the W-9 and W-8BEN-E fork. A US LLC owned entirely from abroad files Form W-9 with the company's EIN, because the entity itself is a US person.

The account holder's own country of residence changes nothing about the EIN. The number belongs to the company, and it stays valid for the life of that company whether the owner lives in Dhaka, Lagos, Karachi, or Ohio.

One EIN covers PayPal and Amazon together. A seller running both under one LLC files one Form SS-4, receives one CP-575, and enters the same 9 digits in both interviews.

Does Shopify require an EIN?

Shopify itself needs no EIN to open a store. Shopify Payments needs one from every US business, because it is a payment processor and files Form 1099-K. A store using an external processor supplies the tax ID there instead.

The split confuses new sellers. The storefront is software and asks nothing of the IRS. The processor moves money and reports it, which is what pulls a tax ID into the flow.

Shopify Payments asks for 4 things: the legal business name, the EIN, the business address, and identity details for the people who own or control the company. That last item is an ownership check run by the processor, separate from the tax ID the IRS reads.

A store on an external processor still needs the same number. Stripe, PayPal, and every US card acquirer ask the same question, so avoiding Shopify Payments moves the requirement rather than removing it.

Dropshipping changes nothing here. The EIN attaches to the selling entity, not to the inventory model, and a store holding 0 units of stock reports through the same 1099-K as a warehouse operation.

How does Form 1099-K work for marketplace sellers?

Form 1099-K reports the gross payment volume a marketplace or processor settled to a seller in a calendar year. It is filed against the tax ID on the account, and copies go to the seller and the IRS.

The reporting threshold was restored by law in July 2025 to more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions in a calendar year. A seller under both figures receives no 1099-K, and still owes tax on the income.

The figure on the form is gross, not net. It counts the full amount buyers paid before marketplace fees, shipping labels, refunds, and chargebacks come out, so the figure printed on the form exceeds the amount that settled into the bank account.

A mismatch between the name on the 1099-K and IRS records triggers a B-notice, and backup withholding at 24 percent follows on later payments. A correct EIN and an exactly matching legal name prevent both.

Multiple platforms produce multiple forms against one EIN. A seller on Amazon, Shopify Payments, and PayPal receives one 1099-K from each of those 3 platforms, each form reporting only that platform's own settled volume, all filed under the same 9 digits.

Why does a marketplace tax interview fail?

Interviews fail on 4 recurring causes: the legal name does not match IRS records, the wrong certification form was chosen, the entity type is wrong, or the EIN is too new to appear in the file the platform checks.

The name mismatch is first by a wide margin. The IRS stores the name exactly as line 1 of Form SS-4 was filled in. Adding a comma before LLC, expanding an abbreviation, or adding a trade name to the field breaks the match.

The certification fork is second. A non-resident who forms a US LLC and then selects non-US person builds a Form W-8BEN-E for a company that is a US person, and the interview stalls against the EIN.

Entity type is third. An LLC taxed as a disregarded entity, an LLC taxed as a corporation, and a partnership are 3 different selections, and the one that matches line 9a of the original Form SS-4 is the correct one.

Timing is fourth and clears on its own. The IRS states a new EIN takes up to 2 weeks to become part of its permanent records, and an interview run on day 1 of that window fails on a number that is entirely valid.

Every one of these is fixed by reading the CP-575 letter and copying from it. The anatomy of that letter is covered on the ein confirmation letter page, including the exact field banks and marketplaces read.

The letter itself is broken down field by field on the ein confirmation letter page, and the form behind it line by line on form ss-4.

Who should not pay anyone for an EIN?

Anyone whose responsible party holds an SSN or ITIN should apply free at irs.gov. The online tool issues the EIN in one 15-minute session at $0, from the same IRS system a filing service uses. Paying buys nothing there.

A US resident opening an Amazon seller account is the clearest case. The SSN clears the responsible-party screen, the session finishes in one sitting, and the number arrives on screen before the browser closes.

ITIN holders clear the same screen. An ITIN is validated against IRS records exactly as an SSN is, so a non-resident who already holds one uses the free tool like any US resident.

The line sits at Form SS-4 line 7b. A responsible party with neither number cannot pass online validation, and that one field separates a free 15-minute path from a paper filing with no tracking and no status page.

That gap is the entire product, and it comes at 2 speeds. Standard is $67: einnumber.co prepares Form SS-4, enters Foreign on line 7b, and faxes it within 5 business days or the filing is free, at 12–14 business days total. Fast is $97, filed within 24 hours with the IRS call included, and the EIN and CP-575 land under a week.

The price question in full, including every route at $0, sits on free ein number. Employers of nannies and housekeepers hit the same SS-4 in a different context on ein for household employer.

What else do sellers ask about an EIN for Amazon?

Sellers ask 10 questions about an EIN for Amazon: who needs one, what the tax interview verifies, whether Stripe, PayPal and Shopify read the same 9 digits, when a 1099-K arrives, and how to apply without an SSN at $0.

+Do I need an EIN to sell on Amazon?

Yes, whenever the selling account belongs to a US company. Amazon records the 9-digit EIN in its tax interview and matches it to the legal name in IRS records. A US sole proprietor uses an SSN instead. The IRS charges $0 for an EIN on every route.

+Can a non-resident get an EIN for an Amazon seller account?

Yes. Form SS-4 line 7b accepts the word Foreign where an SSN would go. Fax the form to 855-641-6935 for a US-based entity or 855-215-1627 from outside the United States. The IRS fee is $0, and the resulting EIN is identical to one issued online.

+Does Amazon verify my EIN with the IRS?

Amazon matches the EIN and the legal name together against IRS records. One character of difference holds the interview at pending. Copy the name from the CP-575 letter, which the IRS issues once per EIN and prints the legal name on exactly as it was filed on line 1.

+Does Stripe require an EIN?

Yes for US business accounts, before the first payout is scheduled. Stripe verifies the EIN and legal name pair against IRS records and charges $0 to store it. A US sole proprietor enters an SSN. Stripe Atlas customers already hold an EIN and file no second application.

+Does Shopify require an EIN?

Shopify itself needs none to open a store. Shopify Payments requires one from every US business, because it processes payments and files Form 1099-K. A US sole proprietor supplies an SSN in that field instead. The IRS charges $0 for the EIN, and the same 9 digits also work on Amazon, Stripe and PayPal.

+Do I file Form W-9 or Form W-8BEN-E for my marketplace?

A US LLC files Form W-9 with its own EIN, even when every owner lives abroad, because the entity is a US person. A foreign company with no US entity files Form W-8BEN-E, carrying the EIN in Part I and any treaty claim in Part III.

+When does Amazon send a 1099-K?

When settled payments exceed $20,000 in gross volume and 200 transactions in a calendar year, the threshold restored by law in July 2025. The form reports gross payments before fees, shipping, and refunds, and is filed against the tax ID on the account.

+Can I use one EIN for Amazon, Stripe, PayPal and Shopify?

Yes. One entity holds one EIN for its entire life, and all 4 platforms read the same 9 digits. Applying a second time opens a duplicate IRS tax account and splits the year's reporting across 2 numbers, which is what produces mismatch notices later.

+How long before a new EIN works in a tax interview?

The EIN is active immediately for filing. The IRS states a new EIN takes up to 2 weeks to become part of its permanent records, which is the file a marketplace checks. An interview run on day 1 of that window fails against a valid number, so re-run it after the 2 weeks rather than applying a second time.

+Why pay $67 when the IRS charges $0?

You would not, if you hold an SSN or ITIN: irs.gov issues the EIN in 15 minutes at $0. The $67 Standard tier exists for applicants that tool blocks, who face a paper Form SS-4 with no tracking. We fax it within 5 business days or the filing is free, at 12–14 business days total. Fast is $97, filed within 24 hours with the IRS call included, under a week.

This page states IRS procedures and marketplace requirements current as of July 2026. It is not legal or tax advice. einnumber.co is not affiliated with the IRS, Amazon, Stripe, PayPal, or Shopify.

How do you finish the Amazon tax interview?

Finish the Amazon tax interview by entering the legal name and the 9-digit EIN exactly as the IRS CP-575 letter prints them, then signing electronically. The IRS charges $0 for the EIN on all 3 of its routes.
